Raised in the Bronx and coming out strong

For every illustrious neighborhood on the planet, there will always be a dark corner that isn’t too far away. In this type of corner, the environment is not as peachy as one’s imagination would hope for. One such place is the Bronx, in New York.

The Bronx actually started off as a settlement where people from different ethnicities came together. Without any semblance of order and few people who cared, it evolved into one of the unkindest social environments in the country.

From the early 1900s to the latter part of the ‘70s, living in the Bronx was characterized by lots of violence. With the slum population that crept into the urban landscape, many gang wars erupted. Many people got hurt or killed. Even children never lived beyond their youth and died too soon.

The Bronx has a certain effect on any given person who has grown up in the area. Either the individual survives by giving in to the pressure of evils and end up propagating such, or they develop the rare ability to pursue what is right, despite the odds stacked against him.

People like Sam Zherka know how it feels to seriously doubt that the next day is survivable. Surviving against all the odds, Sam came out strong, learning from all the hardships he and his family face. And these days, his philanthropic ventures certainly guided by the storms of tyranny, oppression, and discrimination he weathered as a young man. The Bronx turned him into the individual that he is today, and he did more than well.
